Amerikalı yıldızımız Chelsea Gray ile bir röportaj gerçekleştirdik.
We have interviewed our American star Chelsea Gray.

First of all, could you please tell us about your transfer story to Çukurova Basketbol. How have things proceed?

Her şeyden önce, lütfen bize Çukurova Basketbol’a transfer olma hikayeni anlatabilir misin? İşler nasıl ilerledi?

I decided to take some time off and come overseas for half a season.  It was perfect timing when the club reached out to my agent for me to come join Çukurova.  It’s been great being here.  The professionalism and how the team treats their athletes have been amazing. Çukurova is in a great city, so I have enjoyed my time here so far.

WNBA’e biraz ara vermeye ve yarım sezonluğuna denizaşırı bir yere gitmeye karar verdim. Yönetim, menajerime mükemmel bir zamanda iyi bir teklifle ulaştı. Burada olmak harika. What did you feel when you heard of Çukurova Organization had an offer for you?

I was excited to come to Cukurova because I heard so many good things about the staff and team.  I’ve only been able to visit Mersin for away games, so I was excited to be able to live here for a few months.

You were born in California, USA. How was your first introduction with basketball?

Kaliforniya, A.B.D’de doğmuş biri olarak Basketbol ile ilk tanışman nasıldı?

My brother Steven was the first one that introduced me to basketball.  I watched my older brothers play basketball so I was excited to do what they did.  I kept playing and I eventually began to love it.

Kardeşim Steven, beni basketbolla ilk tanıştıran isimdi. Büyük kardeşlerimi basketbol oynarken izlerdim ve yaptıkları şeyi yapmak için heyecanlandırdım. Oynamaya devam ettim ve nihayetinde basketbolu sevmeye başladım.

Have you practice any other sports in your childhood?

Çocukluğunda hiç başka sporla ilgilendin mi?

I used to play soccer.  I loved soccer.  It was such a fun sport, and I enjoyed playing outdoors.

Futbol (Avrupa futbolu) oynardım. Futbolu severdim. Benim için bir eğlence sporuydu. Ayrıca, açık hava sporlarını severdim.

What do you think about the basketball played in Turkish League? Do you like the game being played here? How would you describe game style in here from your perspective?

Türkiye Ligi’nde oynanan basketbol ile ilgili neler düşünüyorsun? Burada oynanan oyunu beğeniyor musun? Kendi perspektifinden, buradaki oyunu nasıl tanımlarsın?

I think the basketball in Turkey is really good.  I think the level of competition allows me to continue to improve every year.  The style of play is a bit different than the WNBA.  For example, defensive rules like allowing people to be in the key for three seconds.  That is not allowed in the U.S.

Bence, Türkiye’deki basketbol gerçekten iyi. Mücadelenin düzeyinin her yıl gelişmeme devam etmemi sağladığını düşünüyorum. Oyun tarzı WNBA’dekinden biraz farklı. Mesela oyuncuların boyalı alanda 3 saniye kalabilmesine izin verilmesi gibi. Buna WNBA’de izin verilmiyor.

Is there any name you were taking as an example while before you went pro?

Profesyonel olmadan önce kendine örnek aldığın isimler var mıydı?

I loved a few players when I was younger.  Magic Johnson, Allen Iverson, and Ticha Penicheiro

Gençken birkaç oyuncuyu çok severdim. Magic Johnson, Allen Iverson ve Ticha Penicheiro bunların başında geliyordu. 

Do you do any personal training in addition to your daily training with the team?

Takımla olan günlük antrenmanına ek olarak bireysel antrenman yapıyor musun?

It depends what time will allow for me to do other training in addition to work-outs with the team.

Takımla yaptığımız antrenmanlardan sonra kalan zamana göre değişiyor.

How is your relationship with your team mates? Who is your bestie so far?

Takım arkadaşlarınla olan ilişkin nasıl? Şu ana kadar en iyi arkadaşın kim?

My relationships with my teammates are good.  We laugh and things like that often.  I wouldn’t say I have like a bestie, but it’s been nice getting to know new people this year.

Takım arkadaşlarımla olan ilişkim güzel. Sık sık gülüyoruz ve eğleniyoruz. Henüz en iyi arkadaşım olduğunu söyleyemem ancak bu yıl yeni insanlar tanımak güzel.

Could you tell us your daily routine life in here Mersin? What do you do in your spare time? 

Mersin’deki günlük rutinini söyleyebilir misin? Boş zamanlarında neler yaparsın? 

Besides practice, I go with Tipesa to the Marina, the mall, and to Starbucks.  We like to go to the movies or just be outdoors because of the nice weather.

Antrenmandan dışında, Tipesa ile birlikte limana, AVM’ye ve Starbucks’a giderim. Sinemaya gitmeyi ya da güzel havada dışarı çıkmayı severiz.

Mersin is well known with its good food. Do you like the local food here? If yes, what’s your favorite food here?

Mersin, yemekleriyle iyi bilinir. Buradaki yerel yemekleri beğeniyor musun? Eğer evetse, favori yemeğin hangisi?

My favorite food here in Turkey is the Bulgur rice with chicken.

What are your hobbies? Can you create time to spend on your hobbies in this crazy schedule?

Hobilerin neler? Bu çılgın programda hobilerine zaman ayırabiliyor musun?

My hobbies include watching movies/shows, being outdoors, and I’m finding more time to read.

Hobilerim; film/TV programı seyretmek, açık havada olmak ve kitap okumak.

Do you listen music before the games? Something relaxing or motivational?

Maçlardan önce müzik dinler misin? Rahatlatıcı veya motive edici?

Yes I listen to music before the games.  I do both motivational and relaxing.

Evet, maçlardan önce müzik dinlerim. Hem motivasyonel hem de rahatlatıcı müzik dinlerim.

Let’s go back to basketball again. What does this game mean to you? Do you see it as a job or is it your passion?

Basketbola geri dönelim. Bu oyun sana ne ifade ediyor? Bunu bir meslek olarak mı yoksa bir tutku olarak mı görüyorsun?

The game has brought so many opportunities that I never thought was possible.  I am able to play the game I love and get paid to do it.  I have been able to travel the world and meet various people from all walks of life.  Basketball is what I do, but not who I am.  The experiences playing the game are what help shape me.

Basketbol bana, hiç mümkün olmayacağını düşündüğüm birçok fırsat verdi. Sevdiğim oyunu oynayabiliyorum ve bundan para kazanıyorum. Dünyayı dolaşma ve her çeşit insanla tanışma imkanı buldum. Benim yaptığım şey basketbol ama olduğum şey değil. Şekillenmeme yardımcı olan şey oyundan kazandığım tecrübeler.

What would you want to do as a job if you were not a pro- basketball player and why?

Profesyonel basketbol oyuncusu olmasaydın iş olarak ne yapardın? 

If I were not a pro-basketball player I would be involved in sports some way.  Or I would do things to help have an effect on the youth.

 How would you describe Chelsea off the court?

I am a fun loving person who loves to make people laugh.

What would you say to possible American players who might plan to select Turkey as their abroad experience?

Türkiye’yi yurtdışı tecrübesi olarak seçmeyi düşünen Amerikan oyunculara ne söylersin?

I think Turkey is a great experience and it allows you to play basketball at a high level.

Bence Türkiye güzel bir tecrübe ve size basketbolu yüksek bir seviyede oynama imkanı veriyor.

Before we finish, do you have a message to our fans?

Bitirmeden önce, taraftarlarımız için bir mesajın var mı?

The fans have been great so far, so I hope to continue seeing them.  And to the older man that is in the front of the gym every game, who always yells Haydi Cukurova, keep being loud!  I love hearing him!
